Paper

Inspiration and Idea Development

The pattern of this paper sculpture is inspired by Chinese classical plum blossoms. The overall inspiration comes from Chinese lanterns.

Work-in-process

I downloaded the pattern of plum blossoms from the Internet.

secondly,i carefully cut out the pattern with a utility knife

And then I made an expansion surface of the cube.(8.4cm* 8.4cm*8.4cm* 8.4cm)

Completed Work

This work overlaps several carved patterns to enhance the sense of stereovision and three-dimensional sense.

Reflection

Paper sculpture gives me a feeling of traditional Chinese paper-cutting. So I want to make a Chinese style work. For me, the paper sculpture of the plum pattern is very suitable. Plum blossoms give people a light, cool feeling.

I used three different colour cardstock paper. In order to highlight the elegance, I used a rose cardstock paper. The outer frame of the pattern is a square and a circle in the middle. All the frames are 8.4*8.4*8.4*8.4, and solidified into a cube. Then, the pattern in the circle is carved out with a utility knife.

I am very satisfied with this work, even though I have encountered challenges. It is difficult to engrave the pattern because the branches of the plum are very thin and the flowers are small. I have to carefully engrave the pistil, leaves, and birds’ eyes, because it is easy to engrave the branches in the process of engraving, and then re-painting to engrave again. Anyway, this result is what I am looking for!!
